Chapter 22

Agent Breckenridge’s foot got a little heavier on the accelerator pedal as she cursed the coincidence gods for her bad luck. What was the likelihood that Molly would call her former boss today? She couldn’t blame Erickson. It was her oversight. She should have advised him not to speak to her about Boogaard. But she didn’t have time to stew over it. So she activated the car’s voice-command feature and called her boss.

“Brook, I was just about to call you. You have a meeting tomorrow with the Vancouver office Agent in Charge at 8 a.m.”

“Thanks, boss, but that’s too late. There’s been a development.”

Breckenridge informed him of her call with Kent Erickson and her wish to obtain Molly’s home address.

“I’m still trying to clean up the mess you created in Bellingham. I can’t have you going rogue in Vancouver.”

“I’m not going rogue. I just want to meet this Molly McFadden and see what, if anything, she knows about our serial killer.”

“Well, that will have to wait until tomorrow.”

“Alright,” Breckenridge relented, already formulating an alternate plan.

“Oh, that was too easy. I know you, Brook. Don’t you dare go behind my back on this one. I can’t keep pulling your ass out of the fire.”

“I said, alright, didn’t I?” she protested.

“Yes, but what you say and what you do don’t always jive.”

“But I get results,” she countered.

“Yeah, but I’m afraid that your efforts to get results might come at a very high cost at some point.”

“Ah, so what if I piss off a few people? They’ll get over it, eventually.”

“I don’t mean that cost, Brook. I mean, you might die. It’s not like you’re dealing with kids stealing candy at the five and dime.”

“Your age is showing, boomer. There aren’t any five and dimes anymore.”

“You know what I mean, Miss Millennial. Just cool your heels tonight. Not everything has to be done in an instant. Okay?”

“I’ll try,” she replied, knowing she wasn’t going to try very hard.

“Brook, don’t test me,” he exclaimed in a warning tone.

“Have a good night, boss,” she replied sweetly before ending the call.

Torkelson let out a frustrated sigh, knowing his warning was probably fruitless. She was like a horse that refused to be broken. Meanwhile, Brook was already on the phone with an FBI Analyst friend.

“Hey, Frito, I’ve got a favor to ask.”

Frito was the nickname FBI Analyst Fred Odenkirk had earned. It had been Fredo but evolved to Frito due to his obsession with and appetite for Fritos Corn Chips.

“And here I thought you called to wish me a happy birthday,” he replied.

“Aw, it’s your birthday? Well, happy birthday! Why aren’t you out celebrating?”

“I was joking, Brook. It’s not my birthday. But thank you. Now, what can I do for you?”

“I need the current home address and vehicle information for Molly McFadden. She works in Vancouver, Washington, so I imagine she lives in or around there.”

“Alright, that should be easy. I’ll text you the info in a few minutes. Anything else?”

“No, that’s it for now. Thanks, you’re the best, Frito,” she replied, ending the call.
