Chapter 22
Agent Breckenridgeâs foot got a little heavier on the accelerator pedal as she cursed the coincidence gods for her bad luck. What was the likelihood that Molly would call her former boss today? She couldnât blame Erickson. It was her oversight. She should have advised him not to speak to her about Boogaard. But she didnât have time to stew over it. So she activated the carâs voice-command feature and called her boss.
âBrook, I was just about to call you. You have a meeting tomorrow with the Vancouver office Agent in Charge at 8 a.m.â
âThanks, boss, but thatâs too late. Thereâs been a development.â
Breckenridge informed him of her call with Kent Erickson and her wish to obtain Mollyâs home address.
âIâm still trying to clean up the mess you created in Bellingham. I canât have you going rogue in Vancouver.â
âIâm not going rogue. I just want to meet this Molly McFadden and see what, if anything, she knows about our serial killer.â
âWell, that will have to wait until tomorrow.â
âAlright,â Breckenridge relented, already formulating an alternate plan.
âOh, that was too easy. I know you, Brook. Donât you dare go behind my back on this one. I canât keep pulling your ass out of the fire.â
âI said, alright, didnât I?â she protested.
âYes, but what you say and what you do donât always jive.â
âBut I get results,â she countered.
âYeah, but Iâm afraid that your efforts to get results might come at a very high cost at some point.â
âAh, so what if I piss off a few people? Theyâll get over it, eventually.â
âI donât mean that cost, Brook. I mean, you might die. Itâs not like youâre dealing with kids stealing candy at the five and dime.â
âYour age is showing, boomer. There arenât any five and dimes anymore.â
âYou know what I mean, Miss Millennial. Just cool your heels tonight. Not everything has to be done in an instant. Okay?â
âIâll try,â she replied, knowing she wasnât going to try very hard.
âBrook, donât test me,â he exclaimed in a warning tone.
âHave a good night, boss,â she replied sweetly before ending the call.
Torkelson let out a frustrated sigh, knowing his warning was probably fruitless. She was like a horse that refused to be broken. Meanwhile, Brook was already on the phone with an FBI Analyst friend.
âHey, Frito, Iâve got a favor to ask.â
Frito was the nickname FBI Analyst Fred Odenkirk had earned. It had been Fredo but evolved to Frito due to his obsession with and appetite for Fritos Corn Chips.
âAnd here I thought you called to wish me a happy birthday,â he replied.
âAw, itâs your birthday? Well, happy birthday! Why arenât you out celebrating?â
âI was joking, Brook. Itâs not my birthday. But thank you. Now, what can I do for you?â
âI need the current home address and vehicle information for Molly McFadden. She works in Vancouver, Washington, so I imagine she lives in or around there.â
âAlright, that should be easy. Iâll text you the info in a few minutes. Anything else?â
âNo, thatâs it for now. Thanks, youâre the best, Frito,â she replied, ending the call.
